Day 11 - At Sea

The seas were incredibly rough over night and we didn't manage to sleep until about 3 am when it calmed down a little.  Things got bad again during the day and the swell was around 9m at lunch time and a lot of things fell off shelves in the cabin and off the table at lunch.  It was really difficult to walk.

We had another day at sea  making slow progress due to high oncoming winds.  It looks like we won't get to South Georgia until Monday evening.

First event of the day was a mandatory briefing on visiting South Georgia which included a very moving film made by the Government of South Georgia and narrated by David Attenborough.  There are very strict rules, possibly stricter than those for Antarctica landings.

We had a mandatory cleansing session of our boots and outer clothing as they will be inspected by officials on arrival at South Georgia to ensure we don't bring any invasive plants or seeds onto the island.

The morning lecture was about Orca's or Kilker Whales which exist in oceans all over the world.

Two new bird species were spotted while I was on deck.

Grey Headed Albatross

Antarctic Prion

Our evening lecture was about aviation in Antarctica.  The first flight was in a hot air balloon.

No videos today so here are some photos taken around the ship:
